In my favorite childhood novel “Love, Stargirl” by Jerry Spinelli, Stargirl leaves behind orange halves throughout the town as a treat for birds and other animals. These oranges come to mark her path. If someone in town saw an orange half on top of a fence, they knew Stargirl had been there.
I write Kimber Was Here to have a record of how I make sense of the world. These essays are my oranges.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for following along.
Hello lovely KWH Readers!
I want to start a new ~thing~ in my newsletter where I give a mid-month check-in of things I did, saw, heard, and drew. I first discovered this “review frame” concept in this newsletter, and have been doing it in my personal journal since the beginning of the year! (it helps me to have a structure sometimes)
I have always been someone who is observant of the world, so it’s fun to tap into my senses and pay attention to what I am seeing, hearing, and doing. I thought it would be fun to share some of these with you!
Without further ado…
DID:
I did everything I wanted to do. Jonny and I had a Kimber-weekend! This wasn’t even planned, but we ended up doing all of my favorite things in one weekend.
These things included:
Going on a walk downtown by the river
Going to Trader Joe’s
Going to the library to take time to write
Eating chicken wings for lunch
Going to CRAFT (my favorite place to get creative in Austin!)
Going to the farmer’s market
SAW:
I saw a really, really cute dog. I went to the Austin Humane Society yesterday and absolutely fell in love with a puppy there. I went around to each of the cages saying hello to all the dogs, and when I put my hand up to Willow’s cage, SHE STUCK OUT HER PAW TO GRAB ONTO MY HAND. I kid you not. I ended up calling Jonny bawling asking him if we could bring her home. I truly rearranged our lives in my mind, thinking about how we could pay extra hotel fees on our 20+ hour drive home, and who would take care of her when we visit Jonny’s parents in Thailand next year.
In the end, I didn’t take her home, but if anyone is in the Austin area… look at her sweet face!
HEAR:
I heard my favorite album of the summer, over and over. Still Woozy’s album is a bit more emotional than his past albums, but still brings the catchy and low-key style that he is known for. It’s the perfect album for summer drives, summer walks, summer anythings. My personal favorites are “Again” and “Baby”.
I also heard the audio of “What do we do with the Bible?” by Richard Rohr. It’s quick listen — only 1.5 hours! Very thought-provoking, and definitely something I want to revisit in the future.
DRAW:
I drew my creative process. At the challenge of Worm School, Week Seven,
invited subscribers to know and draw their creative cycle. I got a good giggle looking through and resonating with other people’s depictions of creativity.Doing this newsletter has helped me get to know my creative process better. It looks something like this:
Let me know what you are doing, seeing, hearing, and drawing!
Thanks for reading,
What a delightful post! I’m in love with Willowww.🥹 Loved your creative process drawn out. So relatable. Especially the “hey this is pretty good!” then, “oh wait, this is terrible” revise, revise, revise. 😆
